The Acute Rehab Unit at Mesa General Hospital is a 19-bed "home-like
environment" that provides a comprehensive physical and
cognitive rehabilitation program designed to help our patients
gain the highest level of function and independence after a
disabling injury or illness occurs.
We believe strongly in the following when
it comes to treatment:
- Smaller is better- our small unit encourages
a personalized one-on-one approach to serving our patients.
- Patients deserve individualized care-
a treatment plan specific to each patient’s unique
needs is developed by the patient, physician, and their
supportive clinical team.
- Education is critical- family and patient
education should always be used to build a bridge from hospital
to home.

What
We Do
Our team of healthcare professionals coordinate
services, such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy,
to help patients suffering from functional loss. After an
evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is created to help
develop skills needed to live as independently as possible
after leaving the hospital. Team members may include:
- A Physiatrist, which is a physician specializing
in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
- A Neurosychologist who specializes in the assessment
and treatment of neurological and psychological conditions.
- Physical Therapists who specialize in
helping patients to regain strength, flexibility, mobility,
balance and endurance, and to relieve pain.
- Occupational Therapists who specialize
in helping patients improve their ability to perform tasks
of daily living in their working environments.
- Speech Therapists who specialize in improving
communication and cognitive skills in expression, comprehension
and writing skills. They also assist with the diagnosis
and treatment of swallowing disorders.
- Rehabilitation nurses
- Case Managers/Social Workers
- Respiratory Therapists
- Registered Dieticians
- Wound Care Specialists
The following functional problems can be
improved with rehabilitation:
- Balance and coordination impairments
- Inability to swallow
- Decreased ability to move in bed or from
one place to another
- Decreased ability to perform daily living
activities, such as eating, grooming, dressing, bathing,
and homemaking
- Cognitive/ perceptual deficits or speech
and language problems, often in conjunction with physical
limitations
- Inability to work or function in the
community due to physical impairment
- Weakness or limited motion in arms, legs,

Patients can be admitted from hospitals, physician offices,
assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, or

is able to assist the patients admitted to the facility. Eligibility
for admission will be reviewed on an individual basis and
must meet the following criteria:
- Requires daily physician visits to oversee
the patient’s medical needs and functional care plan.
- Needs at least two forms of therapy.
- Must be able to tolerate three
hours of therapy over the course of the day, or the potential
to build up to that in a short period of time. Adequate
